Twenty minutes east of Asheville, Black Mountain has something the city does not: a walkable downtown that is genuinely the centre of town, anchored by a bookstore, a bakery, two galleries and a hardware store that has been in the same family since 1962.

Lake Tomahawk sits a few blocks west with a flat one-mile loop, a pool and a fishing dock. The Montreat trails and the Seven Sisters ridge are five minutes further. It has been a summer retreat since the 1890s and a full-time home for a growing number of people who commute into Asheville three days a week.
