Montford is Asheville's oldest intact historic district and the closest thing the city has to a proper neighbourhood: brick sidewalks, stone retaining walls, and a genuine mix of 1890s Victorians, 1920s bungalows and a handful of sympathetic infill townhomes built in the last fifteen years.
The district runs from the bottom of Montford Avenue up to the reed creek greenway, with Montford Park and its tennis courts at the centre. Downtown is a twelve-minute walk over the hill, which is why so many of my clients here are people who want one car, not two.
Queen Anne, Four Square, Craftsman and Dutch Colonial sit on the same block. Local historic district review protects the streetscape, which is why the block you buy on will look the same in twenty years.
Twelve minutes to the Grove Arcade, eight to the greenway, four to Nine Mile. Most Montford owners report driving under five thousand miles a year.
Montford has an active neighbourhood association, a garden tour, and a Halloween that closes streets. If you want anonymity, this is not the district for you.
