Sample guide · Illustrative prices and amenities
West Asheville is what happened when a working-class streetcar suburb kept its 1920s bungalows and let a hundred small businesses move into them. Haywood Road is the spine: coffee, hardware, tacos, a proper butcher, two record shops and a theatre within about a mile.
The housing stock is modest — mostly 1,200 to 1,800 square foot bungalows and cottages on small lots — which is exactly why it has become the first rung for a lot of buyers who cannot make downtown work.
Everything within a mile
Groceries, pharmacy, schools, parks and forty-plus independent businesses sit along Haywood Road. The neighbourhood was built before the car and it still works that way.
The most affordable close-in option
For a walkable neighbourhood inside the city limits, West Asheville runs roughly twenty to twenty-five percent below Montford and North Asheville for comparable square footage.
Room to add value
Basements, attics and detached garages are routinely converted here. Several of my clients have added an ADU and a rental stream without changing the street's character.
